They Just Don't Get It

The July issue of Consumer Reports looks at health care for pets. Most of their advice seems good, if somewhat common sens-ical, but in the "What You Can Do" box, they list under prevention

13) Get a cat. They have fewer serious health problems and genetic diseases than dogs

Hah. Get a cat indeed. Getting a cat or a dog isn't a matter of choice -- it's an inherent genetic trait!!

Much more sensible was the comment on the previous page regarding genetic illnesses

Mixed-breed mutts did not suffer from hereditary diseases

Although the word Mutt is rather pejorative...

Does NASCAR Have a Sense of Humor?

Normally the image of the average NASCAR fan is of a serious red-stater (to put it politely). The kind of person who believes it when Bill O'Reilly tells him that the media is a vast liberal conspiracy looking to take away his hard-earned money. But every so often, they just make you do a double take.

Yesterday, to kick off the "MBNA Armed Forces 400" from Dover, DE, they had a five-service fly-by. The Air Force was, according to the Fox announcers, represented by the Texas Air National Guard flying in the Missing Man Formation. OK, I know who that makes me think of, but what was the promoter thinking?
